ALBUM REVIEW: RU THE WORLD “Ruger’s ‘Ru The World’, encapsulates the sensation of traversing the globe, gracing grandiose stages, and basking in the unyielding adoration of his devoted female admirers” A Review By Wale Olaiya Ruger, also known as Michael Olayinka Adebayo, has captivated audiences with his mesmerizing take on a heart-wrenching narrative of love, desire, and insatiable lust. Through the release of his evocative tracks such as ‘Girlfriend‘ and ‘Red Flags‘, Ruger has set a precedent for the embodiment of a Toxic King, a page from Gabzy’s book. Ruger, who has had an incredible journey in the music industry and an even more incredible year in 2023, recently released his debut album in a spectacular manner following an extensive tour and a commendable rollout. On this project, you can’t help but notice the growth Ruger has experienced since his earlier projects, Pandemic, Second Wave, and Second Wave (Deluxe). RU THE WORLD – UNWRAPPING THE GOODS “Ruger has his eye patch on the prize with his debut, Ru The World” The Jonzing World Marquee talent dispels his detractors by confidently reasserting his position as one of the most dedicated and industrious new-generation talents with his impressive debut album. Right from the very first track, it is very clear Ruger has his eye-patch on the prize with his debut, Ru The World. The album is supported by several noteworthy lead singles from the local smash hit; Asiwaju, to the soulful Kristy and of course, the infamous toxic anthem, Red Flags. All of which offer a glimpse of the project and the immense talent and potential Ruger possesses. THE FEATURES There is an abundance of exciting features to look forward to on the album. The inclusion of Stefflon Don, Souti Soul, Govana, Projexx, and The Jugglerz adds another add another layer of anticipation. Ruger’s collaboration with these artists creates a remarkable synergy that showcases the immense talent possessed by each individual involved. In his collaboration with the British rapper Steflon Don, Ruger skillfully uses ‘Addiction‘ to serenade his significant other, expressing his deep affection and desire. Subsequently, he delves into explicit imagery in ‘Likely‘ with Govana. Island Girl featuring Projexx and All My Days with Sauti Sol are other standout features that particularly caught my attention. Furthermore, it is worth noting the sheer brilliance of the album’s melodies. Devoted supporters of Ruger are well aware he is not one to tamper with his melodies, and this is evident in tracks such as ‘Blue’ and ‘I Want Peace‘ where Ruger showcases his knack for captivating listeners with his memorable lyrics and captivating melodies. THE PRODUCTION The album’s production exudes sheer excellence as every producer puts a shift into crafting an extremely effective body of work. From Kukbeats to Legendury Beatz, to the genius touch of Cadenza, the Jugglerz, TSB, and numerous others. Each producer ensured that their unique sound resonates throughout, no two tracks mirror one another. Every song possesses an individuality on par with Ruger’s unparalleled sound. VERDICT Ruger’s vocal prowess is exemplified by the exquisite manner in which he artfully manipulates his tongue, effortlessly delivering his melodic verses in the cadence befitting of reggae style. EP REVIEW: PSYCHOYP’S OSAPA LONDON “PsychoYP explores a new sonic direction and creative vision while maintaining his signature sound.” PsychoYP is undoubtedly an influential figure in this modern epoch of Hip Hop, standing tall as one of the vanguards behind the resurgence of rap in Nigeria. Through the establishment of Apex Village, a record label based in Abuja, he has greatly contributed to elevating the prominence and recognition of rap music within the Nigerian music industry. He is steadily solidifying his place in the archives of African Hip Hop during this exciting new era, thanks to his run of groundbreaking bodies of work. His recently-released YPSZN3 album has garnered him two Headies nominations, further cementing his status as a true musical trailblazer. With each step he takes, PsychoYP is gracefully etching his name into the esteemed Hall of Fame of African Hip Hop for his generation. OSAPA LONDON EP – UNWRAPPING THE GOODS On “Osapa London“, he explores a new sonic direction and creative vision while maintaining his signature sound. This project showcases a meticulous curation of exceptional guest features, injecting a refreshing dynamism and broadening PsychoYP‘s sonic horizons. Consequently, the EP exudes a commercial appeal as it gracefully leans towards the captivating “Afro” soundscape. THE STANDOUT TRACKS YP infuses elements of Afropop, R&B, and trap seamlessly across the 8-track project. Collaborating with an array of esteemed producers, including Ramoni, Princeton, and Jordan Knows, further attests to PsychoYP’s discerning taste for pleasing melodies and innovative soundscapes. “For this country, where I come from. They openly admit their attraction to their partners. But prefer to focus on the fun and intimate moments rather than dwell on the heartbreak. The inevitable ODUMODUBLVCK is recruited for the massive record, Settle Us! which delves into the intricate lives of young Nigerians, compelled to appease security personnel and street dwellers. “The project boasts a plethora of remarkable guest appearances, yet Laime truly captures the audience with an exceptional performance on Anygaddamntime”. YP also combines with Teni and Wax Bentayga on Bad B, the Txmpl and Jaylon-produced track sees YP in his more familiar sonic space while Teni continues her 2023 run with a solid verse in line with her newfound sound. Additionally, Wax Bentayga delivers the goods with a laid-back verse, engaging listeners with his soothing delivery. The project boasts a plethora of remarkable guest appearances, yet Laime truly captures the audience with an exceptional performance on Anygaddamntime. With an exquisite Saxophone-Assisted chorus, Laime sets the stage for YP‘s verses, which beautifully echo the energy and passion displayed by Laime. VERDICT PsychoYP’s Osapa London epitomizes a staple ground for intertwining a myriad of genres, blending elements of hip-hop, Afrobeats, and trap into a balanced and well-rounded project. EP REVIEW: PLANET PLUTO Shallipopi might be the heir to the throne of the Street Hop Kingdom. The Nigerian-birthed street hop subculture has made remarkable strides since integrating into the mainstream music scene. Renowned figures such as Olamide hailed as one of the subgenre’s pioneers alongside Naira Marley, Lil Kesh, Bella Shmurda, and others, have all graced the throne as esteemed street hop royalty at some points in their careers. All leaving an indelible mark as either kings or rising stars. However, amidst this esteemed company, Seyi Vibez is indisputably seated on the throne and his kingdom reigns supreme. But we cannot overlook the burgeoning ascent of Shallipopi whose successful debut single, “Elon Musk,” which has garnered immense acclaim, further elevated by not one but two remixes. WHO IS SHALLIPOPI? Crown Uzama (born December 14, 2000) better known as Shallipopi is a Nigerian musician from Edo State, Benin City who gained widespread recognition and rose to fame after releasing his hit single Elon Musk, which debuted at number 23 on Apple Music‘s Nigeria’s Top 100.  Known for his unique musical style and charismatic personality, Shallipopi has become a prominent figure on the rise in the music industry. THE RISE OF PLUTO Shallipopi began freestyling at a young age which he posted on his socials, despite facing numerous obstacles along his journey it was his electrifying freestyle rendition of the chart-topping track, “Elon Musk” that captivated audiences on TikTok, propelling him into the limelight. The breakthrough single, quickly gained traction as the audiences resonated with the song’s infectious energy, catchy hook, and cheeky lyrics. His remarkable achievements within a short time did not go unnoticed as Apple Music acknowledged Shallipopi as the Apple Music Up Next for Nigeria, further elevating him into the spotlight. The accompanying music video garnered millions of views on various streaming platforms, further solidifying his growing fanbase; the Pluto citizens and the Plutomania. He’s the rookie of the year, already cosigned by some of the industry’s finest. Shallipopi’s music is characterized by its upbeat and energetic vibe, combining elements of pop, rap and electronic music. His catchy melodies and relatable lyrics have struck a chord with fans of a specific demography. He has received praises from renowned artists such as Zlatan and Fireboy DML, who went on to lend verses on his hit track “Elon Musk”, and most recently Davido and Wizkid, with an Instagram story post of Shallipopi’s new single Ex-Convict which led to a sudden spike in his Apple Music streams. PLANET PLUTO – UNWRAPPING THE GOODS Shallipopi and his team have been shrewd enough to capitalize on a number of viral events and industry endorsements and co-signs. Building on this buzz, he released a surprise project; Planet Pluto, his debut EP which we would be diving deep into. The EP includes four new tracks in addition to the two previously released singles; Elon Musk remix and Ex-Convict The project kicks off with “Obapluto”, an Afropiano composition with the familiar log drums, sampling Osemwegie Ebohon’s Theatre Troupe version of the old Benin folk song “Oba Ovoranmwen”. Shallipopi delivers his signature catchy hooks, rendered in Benin language over the Amapiano-influenced beat setting the tone for the rest of the EP. The second track “Ex-Convict”, is one of the project’s highlights and has already become a radio success. The song has quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top 100 on Apple Music Nigeria. “Who fall before go rise again on a speedometer” Shallipopi on Speedometer Another rave hit on the EP project is Speedometer, Shallipopi retains his tried and tested formula from his previous songs. The Amapiano influence is evident. On “Melanin Touch”, he leans towards Afropop as he conveys a story of desire in the most daring way. You can tell he dug deep to utilize his vocals. He still manages to pull it off. Meanwhile, on “Ahead Ahead,” he sings confidently about his street credibility and his adherence to the street code. The second verse is boastful; it is here that Shallipopi talks his talk. “I put Evian for song, e dey make all of una dey mental” He sings on Ahead Ahead The project closes out with the remix of the breakthrough single; Elon Musk featuring Zlatan and Fireboy DML. The song that laid the foundation for his career. Overall, Planet Pluto thrives on sound production and lyricism that resonates with a specific demography. The EP ushers in an exciting new phase in Shallipopi’s career who is already 2023’s rookie of the year, having been cosigned by some of the industry’s finest. Segun Aniyi Segun Aniyi otherwise known as Oluwasegun Aniyikaye is a Nigerian-born singer, songwriter, and sound engineer. Currently residing in the United Kingdom, he has gradually carved a niche for himself with a distinctive sound infused with RnB and Afroswing. Segun’s passion for music ignited at an early age and he was able to cultivate his skills through his fair share of stints at church choirs and playing multiple instruments before learning music production and engineering. After taking a year break, he started off 2023 strong with his self-produced Afro R&B single ‘Different’, a soothing introspective track about assurances and insecurities where he deftly showcases prowess in both songwriting and production. Seguin Aniyi is unquestionably one of the most promising emerging artists to keep an eye on not only in the year 2023 but also in the foreseeable future and beyond. @segunaniyi Mikun Osikoya Timilehin Ayomikun is a Nigerian Afro R&B recording artist and producer. He was born and raised in Ikorodu, Lagos. He released his debut EP; Sapphire in 2021 independently. And has since then been featured on a couple of singles like MC Rhymz‘s ‘Loyal’ where he delivered one of his most soulful hooks to date and his guest performance on GNG‘s Icontrola‘s Angelina demonstrated his ability to effortlessly captivate listeners. Mikun is recognized for his soul-stirring vocal abilities, and he continues to evolve with each release as seen in his 2023 single, ‘SuperWoman‘ which is one of the best songs in the first half of the year. His undying love for music sprouted during his days as a chorister in his family’s catholic church in Lagos. Since his debut single; Clouds, he has grown exponentially amassing over a million streams on all platforms. He cites Coldplay, Lana del Rey, Asa, Bez, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar as his major influences for his sound which is predominantly alternative. Victor released the deluxe version for his 2022 3-song pack; Relax earlier in the year. With the addition of 3 new songs, the 2023 Relax Deluxe takes you on an emotional and uplifting journey through the highs and lows of life. This project showcases a diverse range of themes, with each song delving into a unique topic. From the exploration of true love and the profound bond between a mother and child to the intense pressure of navigating life’s challenges. The EP covers a wide spectrum of emotions and experiences. His distinctive alternative sound demonstrates his immense talent and versatility making him one to watch out for. @VictorCollinsN LOBI Olaoluwa Adebayo who is also known as Lobi, is a Nigerian-born songwriter and producer. His sound is characterized by a blend of R&B, Afrobeats, and Soul. He attributes his early influences to Ty Dolla $ign, Tay Iwar, Wande Coal, and PARTYNEXTDOOR. Lobi released his debut single, ‘Roses‘ in 2022 to wide acclaim. 2023 saw him team up with his label; Kinfxlk for their self-titled debut collaborative project.Which was highly praised for its creative direction and cohesion. Lobi‘s contribution to the album was remarkable. Most notably on the project’s lead single Kinfxlk Party where he shone through. Elevating the song to new heights with his Jagged Edge-inspired hook. Lobi is poised to release new music this second half of the year. Make sure you stay tuned because there is definitely more magic on the way. Since making the key decision to become a full-time artist in 2020, she’s worked extra hard to fine-tune her sound which primarily combines elements of Soul, R&B, Funk, and Afro. In 2022 Keziah went on a run, releasing self-produced records monthly, that left audiences eagerly anticipating each new release. Her 2023 single, Royalty featuring RnB Princess and Beezyx is currently her highest-streamed song, a testament to her rising popularity. @keziahmallam EDITOR’S NOTE The first half of 2023 has been filled with an abundance of exhilarating moments for both mainstream and emerging artists. ALBUM REVIEW: FOUNTAIN BABY Amaarae flaunts her versatility on her sultry sophomore album. Amaarae established herself as a mainstay of Afro-pop with her critically acclaimed debut album, “The Angel You Don’t Know“, a stellar introduction to her effortless genre-bending prowess and unique artistic flair. The album’s single; Sad Girlz Luv Money featuring Molly, became viral on TikTok shortly after its release in 2020 and in the following year, the the song received a global remix featuring Kali Uchis, which went on to achieve international success, earning Amaarae her first Billboard Entry as well as Platinum, Gold, and Silver certifications in Canada, Portugal, and UK respectively. FOUNTAIN BABY – UNWRAPPING THE GOODS In her sophomore album, Amaarae defies rules and expresses herself on her own terms, free from external pressures. She stays consistent with familiar themes of sexual expression and gender conventions from her previous work. She simply refuses to be boxed. The album opens with the evocative intro All My Love; a breathtaking enchanting string-based masterpiece that exudes cinematic grandeur which sets the tone for a pop experience which is the backbone of this project. On Angels In Tibet, Co-star, Princess Going Digital, and the amazing three-track run of Wasted Eyes, Counterfeit, and Digisuise, Amaarae effortlessly weaves the vibrant elements of rhythmic Afropop and emotive R&B, resulting in a mesmerizing sonic landscape filled with alluring melodies. THE AFROBEATS INFLUENCE Amaarae switches up the tempo on Big Steppa to the more familiar smooth sensual Afro-swing sound she’s crafted for herself. Reckless & Sweet which was released as the album’s lead single earlier in March explores love that comes with a price, as she confronts her gold-digging partner. Aquamarine Luvs Ecstasy and Water From Wine both emanate the same smooth cadence captured on Big Steppa. Despite this apparent duality, the project strikes a sonic balance overall, flaunting Amaarae’s versatility as an artist. VERDICT The production effortlessly propels listeners into an exhilarating and enjoyable Pop journey, punctuated by occasional Afrobeats interludes. Amaarae’s celestial vocals and songwriting align effortlessly with Pop-infused production, showcasing the genre as her most formidable forte.
